4. Installation Process

  • Preparation Work: Since the structure was to be built on the roof of an 8-story existing residential tower, the complete structure had to be lightweight and temporary so that if the need arises, it could be easily dismantled and reused. The main structure was erected with MS Hollow tube frames. All external and internal walls were erected with 100mm ACFA Panels. Panels were inserted in the GI Channels of size 102mm x 20mm x 1mm thick.
  • Installation Technique:
    • Fixing Methods: The GI frames are fixed to the existing RCC roof with 35mm Fischer with screws @ 600mm c/c and on the MS frame with 35mm SDS Screws. 100mm ACFA Panels are inserted in the channels and interlocked with tongue and groove arrangement. The tongue and grooves are pasted with cement-based adhesive. All the openings were cut in the panels and erected. At the top of every opening, a lintel was provided with a panel only. All the panel-to-panel joints are also reinforced with 300mm length 8mm dia Dowel bars.
    • Surface & Joint Treatments: All external joints were done with double tape and ACFA Jointing compound and internal joints were done with single joint tape. All the periphery gaps were sealed with sealants.
    • Painting/Finishing Work: Both external and internal surfaces were finished with texture paints as per the requirements.
  • Challenges Faced: Since the project was located on the top of an 8-storey residential building. Unloading and transferring the panel to the roof was a constraint. Since the project was operational, permission to use the lift was not given to transport the material to the roof. Specialized cranes were used to transfer the material from the ground to the roof. Also, there was no space earmarked for storage, the entire requirement was supplied in 2 parts.
  • Solutions Implemented: The design and solution were successfully implemented and executed, and the site was successfully handed over to the customer.

5. Outcomes and Benefits

  • Final Appearance: The outcome was a lightweight structure as per the requirement of the Saudi building code requirement. The final finish was the same as the finishing achieved in the block wall with better functional properties.
  • Performance Highlights:
    • Weather Resistance
    • Light Weight
    • Fast Construction
    • Fire and Sound Insulation
    • Cost-effective solution
    • Easily dismantlable and reusable
  • Client/Stakeholder Feedback: The contractor was impressed with the speed of work using the panels and the technical support provided by ACFA. He will use the solution in his future projects.

6. Key Learnings and Takeaways

  • Lessons Learned: Project planning, Working under tight schedule

Innovations/Unique Features Introduced: Since the project requirement was to design a lightweight structure with a solid feel that can be easily dismantled and reused, we suggested our ACFA Panel for the same.
